John Boich was a former teacher, principal, and Halton District School Board superintendent (1972-79), who dedicated his career to education. Following his time as a superintendent, Boich served as the Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Education Administrative Officials and on numerous committees and boards, conducted research projects for the Ministry of Education, and provided expertise on several educational studies in other countries.
John Boich was known as a vital contributing member of the Burlington community. John served as a founding member of the Burlington Inclusivity Advisory Committee and most recently, he co-chaired the Shape Burlington committee – a citizen advisory committee on civic engagement that recommended changes in the way city hall engages the public. On Thursday, May 26, 2011, Arlene Millar (John's wife), accepted the Burlington's Citizen of the Year Award on John's behalf.
Mr. Boich passed away on March 15, 2011.
“John William Boich is a very fitting name for the new school,” says Don Vrooman, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “His life's work, both in Canada and around the world, demonstrated his deep passion for education. Boich believed that a community's strength is the result of an engaged, inclusive and diverse citizenry. The Orchard is a perfect example of such a community. His accomplishments will no doubt inspire our students.”
