Personal Technology
As you may recall, the Ministry of Education announced changes under PPM 128 regarding personal electronic devices (cell phone, computers, earbuds) use in schools that will take effect this school year. Starting in September, it is a Ministry requirement that students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 keep their phones on silent and out of sight for the duration of the school day. As is our practice at JWB, students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 should not bring any technology to school. All students have access to a phone, if required, at the office. For Primary/Junior students who do have any electronic device, they will be required to keep phones on silent and out of sight for the duration of the school day.
As was expected in previous years at JWB, students in Grade 7 and 8, cell phones should be in their locker for the school day, breaks included. Their use will only be permitted during instructional time if explicitly allowed by the educator. This is aligned with the current HDSB Technology & You Guidelines. Cell phones and electronics are not necessary for a student to have on them. At the most, we request cell phones and electronic devices stay at home, but at the very least our JWB Intermediates personal devices are to be in their locked locker during the school day.
Students are not required to bring personal devices to school and may not use devices at break time, outdoor recess, in washrooms or the hallways. If choosing to bring in a personal device, please keep in mind that the school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged technology. We will provide any technology that is required for lessons.
