JWB Parent Council Meeting Minutes

Principal Update:

  • World Compliments Day – each student wrote two compliments for fellow students, on JamBoard, teacher vetted.

  • March Madness – spirit week for the week that was previously scheduled as March Break; one theme for each day of the week.

  • IPL working on equity in spirit days e.g. PJ day may not be appropriate for all cultures; change to be more inclusive.

Grade 8 Grad Updates:

  • Grade 8 graduation photos – includes virtual students; coming in after school hours.

  • Spirit wear – Hoodies for grads.

  • Graduation plan – no news yet. The Board will make a decision. We don’t yet know the timing of when the decision will be made. Some members felt the timing was getting close to the end of the year, so is there a possibility to make some tentative plans?

Budget Update

  • $12,680 in our account. Budget report to follow.

Here are my notes for the 2nd half of the meeting

  • Council Funds are approximately $12,000 some of which can go towards Grad Needs

  • Susan asked that we try to coordinate all Grad activities as much as possible to avoid activities being planned for some students and not all

  • Virtual Grad Video was extremely time consuming for staff to put together, hoping for some guidelines and templates for Virtual presentations

  • School Budget Discussion - School focusing on :

    • First Aid/PPE Supplies

    • Additional Furniture for Social Distancing

    • Virtual Learning Supplies

    • Purging Old Library Books over 10 years - commitment to purchasing new books that reflect the entire student population

    • 27% of budget has been spent

  • Council asked for ways to show our appreciation to Teachers' Food Delivery, Virtual Events etc. - Susan & Wendy indicated that written / verbal appreciation messages to teachers is the best and very much appreciated

  • Outdoor Activities at Recess - Great when snow was here to entertain kids, but harder now that snow is melting, challenging with having to sanitize equipment and try to keep it in zone, Certain equipment is limited due to amount of kids and size of zones. Will try to introduce / bring back some more equipment/toys in the coming weeks

  • No News about potential Spring Break Extension or the New School Year - The school hears the announcements the same time as the general public.

  • Lots of Staff Changes/Updates this year. Many staffing leaves for various reasons, there are instances of LTO's coming in for other LTO's for absences, many stages of staff transitioning back on a regular basis. Susan will share updates about staffing when she is able to.

  • Discussed ideas on how to connect with the school community - while considering Virtual/Screen Fatigue. Ideas included

    • Cake Decorating Challenge - Send in Photo for Prizes

    • Virtual Cooking Demonstrations

    • Other Ideas welcome
